Leopold Classic Library is delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive collection. As part of our on-going commitment to delivering value to the reader, we have also provided you with a link to a website, where you may download a digital version of this work for free. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. Whilst the books in this collection have not been hand curated, an aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature. As a result of this book being first published many decades ago, it may have occasional imperfections. These imperfections may include poor picture quality, blurred or missing text. While some of these imperfections may have appeared in the original work, others may have resulted from the scanning process that has been applied. However, our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. While some publishers have applied optical character recognition (OCR), this approach has its own drawbacks, which include formatting errors, misspelt words, or the presence of inappropriate characters. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with an experience that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic book, and that the occasional imperfection that it might contain will not detract from the experience.

Once again, I have to admit I did not know much about our 19th President prior to reading this book. Of course, this is a free public book. I should warn the reader that this book does not cover Hayes' presidency at all, rather, it is a history of his life (brief), his service to the Union in the Civil War, and a portrayal of his three terms as governor from the Buckeye State of Ohio. The last 100 pages are direct excerpts from speeches he gave while a candidate in the gubernatorial race.Obviously, I would have liked coverage of his presidency. However, I could get that information from other sources. There is a great piece about him on Wikipedia. If you are looking for some background on Hayes, this is a great place to start.
Also, I need to warn that this book likens Hayes to some type of deity. Obviously, the author was very impressed with Hayes, the man, and it was written as if he was infallible. We all know this was highly unlikely.
That being said, I was very impressed with Hayes' politics. His arguments in his speeches were very well articulated, supported with counterpoints, and, I agreed with about 90% of Hayes' positions. He seemed to be the first president, including Lincoln, to be fully supportive of African American suffrage. I wholly respect this position, and his zeal for it. I also think, after reading the Wiki article, that he was a great president who agreed to serve only one term.
Also to note, he lost the popular vote in the election to Samuel Tilden, and was awarded the presidency by virtue of a negotiated settlement between Republicans and Democrats to remove Federal troops from the South. Very interesting.
Good read, could have been better.

The life public services and select speeches of Rutherford B Hayes J Q Howard Books Reviews
The book had too many long speeches with a vocabulary suited for politicians and college professors
than his own constituents and voters. The life of Hayes is interesting but insufficient descriptions of
those times were not presented in the book.
Remarkable little book on President RB Hayes written in an engaging 19th-Century style. Unfortunately, Hayes has not been treated well in the history books because of the back-room political deal that gave him the presidential victory over Tilden and his handling of the railway strike. Obscured is his illustrious military career before and into the Civil War which helped Lincoln bind the nation back together. Hidden also from most history accounts is his service and success as Republican Governor of Ohio, reelected twice during turbulent political times, and his winning cross-the-aisle personality. He was well-liked by a wide array of friends and was unusually successful at the universities he attended. Perhaps too much of the book is devoted to his hallmark speeches, but I would have loved to have spent time talking to him and getting to know him personally. Hopefully, more folks will read this book that helps to recover the legacy of Rutherford B. Hayes.
It is a treatise about one of our most underrated and unappreciated Presidents. It is a glimpse into his mind and heart through his eyes and thoughts. He kept a daily diary beginning at age 12 throughout his life. He was a very perceptive, intelligent and unselfish man who left a record of his thinking in his writings and oratory. Although not a West Pointer, he was an instinctive soldier and leader of men into battle who understood the military adage to defeat the enemy soundly. He was a decision maker who dealt firmly with major problems of governance during the reconstruction of the country. For an interesting, informative and insightful look at a man destined to be President of a fractured but salvagable country, the reader will not be disappointed.
